Little progress is still progress… Right?

So, this past month I worked on the SCaN project on the off-side of things. Some evenings I was just too tired to put an effort into DA! and had done more than enough for the move or the paid projects on my plate. But a little scribbling, now that I can always do, yes? So I drafted some sketches into my sketch book and came up with some roughs for the main guys/gals/cat in the story.
As implied, I’ve had a lot of work lately, which is as interesting as it is a blessing to our house. The kind of instability we are facing here in the north (they finally said it, that we have entered another depression), we will take on all the work that comes our way. Crazy times, am I right?
When it comes to this project, it is still pending to be done. DA! is taking its sweet time, but I’m hopeful I will move on to SCaN this year. Maybe. Hopefully. I’m so excited about my first real game project, after all!
FP: SCaN

So I wanted to talk to you about the characters of this game. (Don’t mind the completely unrelated imposing dude in the right corner, he has nothing to do with this!)
First up is John, he is this mellow, wholesome guy. A bit on the bulky side, as you can see, even his head is more of a square block than anything else. He is a theater guy, too, so surprisingly squeaky despite the first glance you may get. He was married to a girl, Jane, and they had a child together. Unfortunately, Jane has since passed, and now John is alone, doing his best to take care of the child.
The family cat had some unfortunate mutations in his line, and ended up with a huge head with huge ears and whiskers, a barrel of a body and stubby little legs. Also, a nub of a tail. He is a very vigilant watcher of the house, often seen near the kid, purring away and acting as the world’s fluffiest pillow. And no, he may be a puff ball, but he ain’t named Fluffy! I don’t know his name yet, but I’m sure it’ll come soon enough.
And then there is the mysterious lady that comes at night. Yup, you could’ve seen that coming from the acronym SCaN. She literally Comes at Night. One looming, ominous eye shining through the falling, oddly translucent dark hair, a gaping black mouth to go with it. What on earth does she want from poor ol’ John and his kid, anyway?
A little about the world
The world has begun taking shape too, and I’ve decided to give this story a forever home at the edges of Yirah, in my first world. Like a sort of suburb of the main town, filled with unlikely brutish men like John, and a ton of mystery around the multitude of guilds all claiming to be the strongest fighters.
Yet, this is a story of theater folk. Why would there even be a theater district in the rough mercenary town? Maybe we will find out, together, as I keep developing this game. All I know is that poor John is haunted by this lady in the night, and needs to get his assets together to make it through. Or not, which would be tragic on so many levels.
So what’s next for SCaN?
I will keep thinking and drafting the story when I can, as well as going through the Game Design course that I have on Udemy. It’s been a fun process so far, so let’s hope it holds when it is time to get to the actual making of the game. I’ve not been known to be a wizard in code, like my husband.
Much like in the ArtLog, I’d like to set 3 steps towards the goal of completing this game.
- Flesh out the main characters and their traits (character listing)
- Make a skeleton for the main story arc
- Rough out variations within the main story arc
So, that’s the grand plan for the coming month.
Have a great time this Autumn, and don’t forget to check out my X,
Mrs. V
