DevLog #7 | SCaN – Worldbuilding

Posted on 31/05/202531/05/2025 by Mrs. Vana

Summary

The past month, especially the end of it, has been quite hectic. The sudden burst of freelance work nearly drowned me, and so, I wasn’t able to work as much on the SCaN GDD as I wished. But hey, we knew this from the get-go, no? But then again, I did do some serious worldbuilding!

The good news is that DA!, the comic project I am working on, is getting closer and closer to being finished. And as previously mentioned, after that is done, SCaN will be my next focus. I want to get this thing out, as ambitious as it seems for a lady who has never done more than dip her toes into the muddy waters of coding.

Thankfully, I am not alone. I have one of the best, most brilliant minds on my side!

The World of SCaN

This is the other reason I got stuck with the GDD. Turns out I hadn’t figured out the story as much as I should have in order to make the detailed account of it in the GDD. The game is very story-driven, and as such, I couldn’t possibly jot down the progression path without building the world around it first. Or at least, that’s how I see it at the moment.

So I began creating.

The story of SCaN takes place in the lowest of my three realms, Gechemo. After all, every story I ever tell, be it a game, comic, or novel, takes place in one of the three realms. It is rather magical how it all ties together…

Anyway. Our player character lives in the lowest realm, the mundane and least magical. He has set up his life in the mercenary sector of Yirah, not a pleasant place to be. Though his situation is relatively steady and good, and he doesn’t have to do much killing, if at all, in his daily life. The city itself is quite charming, despite being quite harsh and cramped, and the district John and his family live in is even more so. Of course, that means very little when death looms over your head…

Current Status and moving forward

As of now, I am working on the Player Objectives part of the document. Hopefully, I will figure out the storyline in the coming month, which would then enable me to write out the objectives briefing according to the draft I made some time ago. After that, the documentation becomes more of a technical question, as the mechanics and objects, and the rest, need to be listed out. I’m sure I will miss some details, but that’s why digital formats are for, no? Easy fixings and edits!

I am still also learning about computer science, as I do truly believe it can help me with this whole ordeal. I mean, surely it is good to know that two cores can do double the work, and that forever loops can fry your hardware. N squared equals BAD, people!

Also, don’t forget to see my ArtLog, that’s where the action is at the moment!
